Phonemic Awareness is a buzz word in education. It's basically a precursor to your child learning to read. You would work on such things like counting syllables, deleting syllables, and recognizing beginning and final sounds of words just by hearing it.

The book above will give you an overall approach on how it all works. In later posts, I'll give you more tips and some free websites that you can trust on how to teach this.
